Liver Transplantation, Non-Candidates and Palliation
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize criteria for non-candidacy in liver transplantation and understand common clinical, psychosocial, and systems-based factors that preclude eligibility.
- Identify prognostic indicators in advanced liver disease that can help guide goals-of-care discussions when transplantation is not an option.
- Integrate principles of palliative care into GI practice for patients with end stage liver disease (management for ascites, encephalopathy, pruritus, and fatigue).
- Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams to optimize quality of life, coordinate community resources, and support patients and families facing end-stage liver disease without transplant options.
